Resentment is brewing among the female students of Women’s’ College MA Road Srinagar against the authorities in Cluster University Srinagar (CUS) for providing admissions to boys in the college for integrated Post Graduation (PG) courses offered by the University.

From the current year, the CUS is all set to start its classes for the students in five constituent colleges of the University.

The Cluster University includes Amar Singh College Srinagar, Sri Pratap College Srinagar, Women’s College M.A. Road Srinagar, Government College of Education Srinagar (Institute of Advanced Studies in Education) and Government Degree College Bemina (Abdul Ahad Azad Memorial College) as its constituent colleges.

However, the girl students in Women’s’ college have opposed the CUS decision to provide admission to boys in the college for BCA and MCA courses.

“This college should be reserved for women’s only. We don’t understand why boys have been introduced in Women’s’ College. This college should be meant for girl students only,” the students said.

They said Women’s’ polytechnic in Bemina provides admissions to girls only while as polytechnic colleges enroll both girls and boys. “Same way our College should be spared for only girls,” the students added.

The female students said most of the parents want their daughters to study in College where only girls are allowed and Women’s College is the one for such parents.

“Our parents won’t feel comfortable if boys are given admissions here,” a group of undergraduate students of the college said.

The students have appealed the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Minister for Education Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari for their personal intervention into the matter and shift these courses to some other Colleges.

“This was the only College in the district where only girls used to study but due to affiliation with cluster university, authorities are giving access to boys due to which we won’t feel comfortable. They should provide admissions to only girl students for these courses in this college,” the students said.

Pertinently, Cluster Universities Srinagar will enroll 320 students- 30 regular and 10 self financed seats per college, for their admissions in integrated PG courses for specific subjects besides the admission in undergraduate courses.

Vice Chancellor Cluster University Srinagar (CUS) Sheikh Javid Ahmed said the courses were started in all the constituent colleges as per the guidelines set by RUSA.

“As per RUSA guidelines BCA and MCA has to be started from this (Women’s’) college while as Economics courses and Science has to start in Amar Singh and SP College,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor said the colleges under CUS are treated as different schools instead of Colleges. “For CUS, Women’s’ College is school of technology and Engineering. We have to launch BCA and MCA from there. It is a University now and we thought we should keep one place for the students,” he said.

He said they are enrolling both boys and girls in Amar Singh College and SP College as well.

The two Cluster Universities, one each for Jammu and Srinagar, have been approved under Rashtriya Uchchttar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) against a total allocation of Rs 110 crore (Rs 55 crore for each University).
