Militant killed, civilian injured in separate incidents

A militant was killed while a civilian was injured in separate militancy related incidents across Kashmir Valley on Saturday.

According to police a civilian was injured after militants targeted government forces in Vesu area of Anantnag in South Kashmir. Police said that the civilian who was identified as Meenu Arif, who works with a construction company in Banihal, was hit after militants missed the target and the bullet hit his car. Arif, 45, is a resident of Bakshiabad area of Anantnag.

Arif, according to a police spokesman, was on way to Banihal when unknown militants fired upon the two vehicles of government forces moving ahead of his car at 5 am today. The fire missed the intended target and hit his car and he was injured in the back. Following the incident, local people gathered around the place and shifted Arif to a hospital, a police spokesman said.

 He said that Arif was shifted to SMHS hospital where his condition is stated to be stable. “About 20 empty cases of AK ammunition have been recovered from the spot. A case has been registered and investigation has been taken up,” added the spokesman.

 In a separate incident Army foiled an infiltration bid in Gurez sector of Bandipora in north Kashmir in which one militant was killed in the operation. The operation was going on till reports last came. From the possession of the slain militant a weapon was also recovered.  The incidents of militancy and cross border infiltration have stepped up leading to the deterioration in security scenario.

 According to army alert troops witnessed a group of militants near the LoC in Gurez and as they were trying to sneak into this side the militants were intercepted and one of them lost his life.

On Friday six militants were killed after armed forces foiled an infiltration bid at Uri as they were trying to sneak into this side. The Army has stepped up the vigil along the border to look out for any militants who may have sneaked to this side for the last few days. A number of infiltration bids were made from across the border which were later foiled by the forces.

Army claimed to have thwarted at least four attempts by the Pakistan Army to infiltrate armed groups into Kashmir in past few days. According to the Army, three militants were killed in Nowgam sector while four others were killed in Machhil sector. An army man was also killed during the encounter in Nowgam sector.

According to Army on Thursday an infiltration bid was foiled in Naugam sector in Kupwara district by them with the killing of three militants while one soldier lost his life as he engaged militants in a retaliatory action.

On Wednesday three heavily-armed militants were killed in a gun battle in the Kupwara district as the army foiled the third major infiltration bid in less than a fortnight along the LoC in North Kashmir.
