Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar is mulling over to seek recognition for the courses like Pharmacology and Anatomy, as a team from Medical Council of India (MCI) is expected to visit the institution next week.

These courses are, as of now, non-recognized by the MCI as the departments have been operationalised with the consent of the state administration and the University of Kashmir.

According to sources, the need to get these departments recognized is seemingly being done to secure the future of the post graduates who otherwise are ineligible for higher education in other parts of the country as their PG degrees are not recognized elsewhere.      Interestingly, department of Pharmacology, is running PG courses since 1966, and is as of now the courses is not recognized by the Medical Council of India.

The candidates passing out from the department of Anatomy, as per sources are not eligible for further studies in the subject outside the state. However, they are eligible for the same, within the state, sources added.

The visit by the MCI team is seen as the decisive one by the institution and all the other stakeholders in the state, as the recognition, if the institution succeeded in acquiring it, would be seen a major step in medical education sector of the state.
