ULB Kashmir kick starts ‘segregation of waste at source’ drive

On the eve of World Environment Day, Urban Local Bodies Kashmir on Monday kick started ‘segregation of waste at source’ drive across Kashmir to safeguard the fragile environment of Valley.

Director Urban Local Bodies Kashmir Reyaz Ahmad Wani visited several areas of Anantnag to mark the beginning of drive under centrally sponsored scheme ‘Swach Baharat’ and addressed a series of gatherings in Bijbehara, Anantnag and Pahalgam.

Chief Executive Officer of Pahalgam Development Authority Mushtaq Ahmad Simnani also attended the function organized by a local NGO in collaboration with Municipal Committee Pahalgam and assured the gathering that PDA as main nodal agency will initiate all the required measure to keep Pahalgam green and clean.

“We have started process for setting up two model garbage pits on scientific line in Pahalgam,” CEO informed the participants who attended the function.

Director Urban Local Bodies Kashmir Reyaz Ahmad Wani highlighted the importance of segregation of waste and garbage at sources and urged participants’ particularly local residents to help authorities in safeguarding the fragile environment.

“Organizations dealing with the issues of environment are worried about the prevailing situation. We have our university in Kashmir which has done Environment assessment survey and came up with alarming observations,” he said.

Seeking the corporation of local residents, Wani said that best help these days is ‘self help’. “We will play our role but don’t wait for the rules, regulations and agencies. Keep your surroundings neat and clean with which we will collectively achieve the ultimate objective of keeping Kashmir green and clean,” he pledged.

Accompanied by executive officers of Municipal Committees of Anantnag, Bijbehara and Pahalgam, Director Urban Local Bodies Kashmir distributed garbage dustbins among local residents. He impressed upon the officers to work with dedication and ensure complete ban on use of polythene bags.

On the occasion, Reyaz Ahmad Wani also released pamphlet of Himalayan Welfare Organization.
