Hizbul commander killing: Campuses erupt yet again

Campuses erupted once again across Kashmir, on Saturday, following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Sabzar Ahmad Bhat and his two associates in Tral village of South Kashmir.

As the news about the killing of three militants spread, campuses erupted in protests. The college authorities at many places suspended the class work in the institutions in wake of the deteriorating situation.

Students in Women’s’ College MA road Srinagar were vacated from the campus and the authorities suspended the class work for whole day. “We suspended the classes at around noon as the news about the killing of three militants spread in Kashmir. We asked the girl students to leave for their homes to avoid any untoward situation,” said a Professor in the college.

Classes were suspended in SP College also as a precautionary measure. However, the Principal of SP College, said the classes was suspended due to the death of the father of a staffer “The father of one of our staffers had passed away and we suspended the classes to offer condolences to the bereaved staffer,” she said.

Meanwhile, students from various institutions gathered at Lal Chowk and staged a protest. This was followed by stone pelting on CRPF bunker at Exchange Road. However, the situation was brought under control later.

Student protests also erupted at Amar Singh College and Polytechnic College in Gogji Bagh area. The witnesses said the students were on the streets and staged protests against the killing of militants in army firing. The protesting students shouted pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

The police deployed in the area swung into action and lobbed tear gas shells on protesting students that triggered clashes.

The students of Baramulla Degree College in north Kashmir staged massive protest against the killing of Sabzar Bhat. The students assembled inside the college campus and tried to march on streets. But the police tried to pacify them but it resulted in clashes. Students from Boys Higher Secondary School (HSS) Baramulla also staged protests in main chowk of the town. But the situation was brought under control.

Mild clashes also erupted in Pattan area of Baramulla town after students from HSS Pattan staged protests in the area.

Reports of students’ protests and clashes were also reported from Langate and Handwara town of Kupwara district. Witnesses said the students from Higher Secondary School Langate, HSS Handwara and Degree College

Handwara staged massive protests against militant and civilian killings. Students resorted to stone pelting on the police deployed in the area. To bring the situation under control, police lobbed tear shells on them.

 

The students from HSS and Degree College Sopore too staged protests against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander but when the police tried to chase away the youth it resulted in clashes.

There was a protest inside the Kashmir University campus. The students took out a protest march in campus but later dispersed peacefully.

Amidst all this, students of Government Degree College Bijbehara blocked Bijbehara-Pehalgam road near Degree College Bijbehara and protested the killing of Sabzar Bhat. Massive clashes have been reported from Pulwama and Shopian districts in south Kashmir. Student protests were reported from Seer Hamdan in south Kashmir’s Mattan town.
