Forces, militants exchange gunfire

A brief encounter broke out in South Kashmir’s Kakpora area of Pulwama district on Tuesday afternoon, police sources said.

They said that an encounter started between government forces and a group of militants at Kakpora area after a joint team of Army’s 55 RR, SOG, troopers from CRPF 183 and 182 battalion cordoned off the Hakirpora village following specific information about the presence of some militants in the area.

Soon after the joint team of forces intensified the cordon-and-search operation and fired several warning shots towards the suspected spot, the officer said, adding that the militants hiding inside the area opened fire triggering off an encounter.

A police officer while confirming the encounter said that three militant are believed to be trapped inside the area.

Sources said that a top LeT militant was believed to be trapped alongside his two accomplices.

However, reports said that the militants managed their escape from the spot forcing the troops to call off the operation.
