He said the upcoming generation is not familiar with Kashmiri and prefers to communicate in other languages. “During the upbringing of child, the parents communicate in Urdu or English and sideline the mother tongue,” he said, adding that miniscule number of children in Kashmir in the contemporary times know how to read and write Kashmiri.

Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir however assured the gathering that the varsity would do whatever is possible to promote Kashmiri. He said that CUK in association with the Academy of Art, Culture and Language, Radio Kashmir Srinagar and YWA would constitute an award for best writing in Kashmiri. Prof. Mir said the award would be given to the writer after a panel thoroughly scrutinizes his/her work.

Dean Students Welfare, Dr. Fayaz A Nikka while speaking on the occasion also underscored the need of promoting Kashmiri. He said the language was dying with each passing day and the need of the hour was to make strenuous efforts to keep it alive.
