The failure of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to provide parking facilities in Srinagar city has reached a new low with the department failing to provide facilities outside its own head office in Karan Nagar area.

Local residents told Kashmir Vision that SMC’s big claims for Srinagar city have turned futile on the ground.

“SMC always claims that they will remove encroachments from the city roads. But see the apathy of the department that they are unable to clear the encroachment outside their office,” they residents said.

“By not clearing the road outside their office, they take the people for a ride. This is case of SMC office, and then what would be the condition of other offices of the city,” they added.

A shopkeeper outside the SMC office seeking anonymity told Kashmir Vision that the encroachment has created a lot trouble for them. “Unknown people come here and park their vehicles on the road,” he said adding that the department still continues to sit as a bystander to these problems.

“As a shopkeeper in the area, we don’t have any parking slot to park our vehicles. So, frequently we park our vehicles in the interior lanes or by-lanes,” he said

When contacted Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Shafqat Khan passed the buck and said “It is not my job. It is the job of Traffic Department.”

SSP Traffic City Sargun Shukla blamed the shortage of space in the Srinagar city. “We can’t keep many vehicles in our yard. There is the shortage of space in it,” he said.
