The residents of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district Saturday alleged that the illegal sand extraction goes unabated in Nallah Visho while the authorities are acting as mute spectator.

Inhabitants of the district accused authorities of inaction against the ‘vested interest elements’ who according to them resort to illegal extraction of sand, bajri and boulders from on Nallah Visho.

Locals told Kashmir Vision that some people are extracting sand, bajri, boulders illegally from nallah Vishow thereby resulted in the receding of water level besides weakening the embankments.

“The illegal extraction from the nallah is posing a threat to the fish production,” they said.

“The JCB’s are openly extracting the sand from the nallah while the authorities don’t even bother to reach the spot to take action against them. It seems that the authorities are hand-in-glove with these elements as no action is being taken against them,” the locals alleged.

The locals appealed to the higher-ups of the concerned department to look into the matter and deal with the offenders strictly.

Meanwhile, District Mineral Officer Kulgam told Kashmir Vision that the action against the illegal sand extractors has already been taken. “We have already taken action against those involve in the illegal sand extraction,” he said.
