4 including a policeman, 2 civilians killed in Kulgam militant attack

Two civilians and a policemen were among the four people who were shot dead by a group of heavily armed militants at Qazigund late this evening, police said. A militant is also believed to have been killed in the attack.

According to a police official a policeman was among those who died in the attack which took place late evening at the busy Malpora area of Qazigund. Police said that the information was received at the Mirbazar police post that an accident had taken place at Malpora following which the party was rushed to the spot, but it came under heavy fire by the militants.

During the attack two policemen were injured while as two local civilians who were passing by also received bullet injuries. All the three succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital, police sources said.

A police official said that the message was received at the Mirbazar police post that an accident had taken place at Qazigund in which one person had lost his life. As the police party reached the spot to ascertain the facts, they came under heavy fire of militants in which two policemen died.

A tractor had met with an accident in which the driver had lost his life. But as soon as the police party reached the spot, militants had laid an ambush and fired upon them. Later the police contingent was rushed to the spot, but the militants had managed to escape from the place. During the attack two more civilians had also received injuries and they were being treated at the hospital, officials said.

A police official said that the civilians and the policemen who had received injuries earlier were rushed to the District Hospital at Janglat Mandi, where they succumbed to their injuries. He said that the militants involved in the attack were engaged nearby and a militant was killed in the gunfight. 

“One policemen, two civilians and one militant were killed in the attack,” DG Police, Dr. S P Vaid was quoted by a private news channel.  

The incident took place near the main highway creating panic among the people.  A senior police official however said that the exact death toll was being ascertained, adding that combing operation has been launched to trace the militants who fled from the spot.  

“The investigation in the case is on and the security presence has been beefed up after the militant attack,’’ said a senior police official.

The militancy incidents have stepped up in South Kashmir particularly in the areas of Anantang, Shopian and Kulgam where the police and paramilitary forces have launched crackdowns and searches in the wake increased attacks.
