Pulwama probe recommends action against police officials

The government probe ordered into the thrashing of Pulwama College students on April 15 has recommended action against some Police officials for trespassing into College. However the report has exonerated Principal of the College of any involvement into the incident that resulted in injuries to over 50 students during the clashes with police.

A senior official in state administration said the one man inquiry report, headed by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir was submitted to government on Wednesday and has confirmed the trespassing of security forces in the College premises.

“The probe has confirmed trespassing in college and has recommended action against some police officials as well,” the official said.

He said the Principal of the College Abdul Hameed Shiekh has however been exonerated of his involvement in the incident.

“The Principal has not been directly or indirectly been found involved into the incident which resulted into clashes between students and Police in college premises,” the official said.

The official however said the action against concerned Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Station Head Officer (SHO) Pulwama may be initiated by the Police department.

“It is to be seen whether a departmental inquiry will be initiated by police department against the two officials or they will take some other decision to punish the police officials,” he said. “But they will be shifted from their present place of postings.”

The official said the Higher Education Department will also order for detachment of Principal Abdul Hameed from Director Colleges and order for his posting in the College.

Over 50 students were injured in Police action after clashes erupted inside the premises Pulwama College between the students and Police on April 15 (Saturday). Following the incident campuses across the Valley erupted in protest on April 17 (Monday), forcing divisional authorities in Kashmir to order for closure of all educational institutions on Tuesday. Later the class work was suspended for a week’s time in all Colleges across Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the J&K Cabinet that met on April 18 had attached Principal of the College- Abdul Hameed Sheikh to Director Colleges in Higher Education Department (HED) while an inquiry was ordered as well.

Even after the passage of over 10 days, the government is apprehending student protests and ordered suspension of class work in one of the Government Schools in Srinagar. Also, the authorities have also ordered for deployment of the Police party outside the SP college gate in Samandar Bagh lane here to avoid entry of outsiders into the college premises who later mix up with the students and stage protests.
