World Book Day: Day-long book exhibition held in Srinagar

To commemorate the World Book Day, Department of Libraries and Research today organized a day-long book exhibition at Gani Memorial Reading Centre at Rajouri Kadal in old city here.
 
The day is celebrated yearly throughout the world on April 23 to promote book reading culture.
Sub District Magistrate North Srinagar, Syed Haneef Balkhi, who was the chief guest on the occasion inaugurated the exhibition during which collection of books including Quranic Manuscripts, Sanskrit Manuscripts, Paintings, references and some rear books were put on display.
 
Exhibition evoked good response and was thronged by the book lovers, students and others in a large number.
 
While deliberating upon the need of promoting book reading, the SDM said that books are our best friends.  He said we should inculcate habit of book reading among our younger generation so that their mental horizon widens.
 
He said today’s students and youth spend most of their time on mobile phones and its overuse has negative effects of health and impacts intellectual growth. He said there is dire need of making reading books, journals, newspapers etc a habit for enlightenment.
 
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Director, Libraries and Research, Kashmir Division, Samreen Naik, urged people to enroll themselves at different libraries to benefit from the huge collection of books which have been made available for the general public.
