Minister chairs high level meeting on disaster management

Minister for Revenue, Relief, Disaster Management, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, Abdul Rehman Veeri today said that providing real time data and information to support control centers and operating agencies holds key in mitigation of disasters.

The Minister said that it is high time to use latest technology for real time data collection to have a strong management, commitment and cooperation for natural disaster contingency.

Mr Veeri was speaking at a high level meeting of Disaster Management here.  The meeting was attended by Financial Commissioner Planning and development BB Vyas, Financial Commissioner Revenue Lokesh Jha, DGP Dr S.P Vaid, Commissioner Secretary Finance Naveen Chowdhary, Commissioner Secretary Revenue Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Pawan Kotwal, IGP SDRF Danesh Rana, Special Secretary Relief and Rehabilitation Aijaz Ahmed Bhat and other officers.

The meeting was also attended by management of Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation (KEONICS), a wholly owned company of Government of Karnataka.

Veeri asked for the status of centralized control room coming up in Srinagar and Jammu for coordination of different agencies and mitigating the effect of disasters.

The Minister stressed on the digital integrated mass notification system which will help to give a proper idea of magnitude of water flowing at a particular time in lower areas.

He also stressed on formulation of strategic implementation plan for an effective disaster management system, “Creation of natural disaster data and information management system should be given prime importance at all levels of administration,” he said.

Veeri stressed on the expansion of scope of disaster management activities with participation of wider range of stakeholders in much wider range of activities.

Later on KEONICS presented a proposal through Power point regarding mitigation of disasters in the J&K through wireless software based Disaster alert, communications and management system.

Managing Director KEONICS Raj Kumar Srivastava said that they would provide customized solution to give early warning and alert to the Jammu & Kashmir administration for urban fires, floods, landslides, earthquakes and forest fires.

The MD assured the meeting that KEONICS would work with the administration to map the problems and develop a suitable Wireless early warning and communication system for the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar at the earliest.
