Clashes erupted in Sopore town of North Kashmir when youth tried to take a protest march from Jamia Masjid area to main Chowk of the town, shouting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans .

Following Hurriyat’s protest call after friday congregational prayer, clashes were reported when protesters were stopped by the government forces already deployed in the Main chowk of Sopore. The youth started pelting stones on forces who in turn retaliated by tear gas shelling resulting in the shutdown.

According to reports, police resorted to teargas shelling and sound grenades to quell the protests.

During the clashes shopkeepers closed down their business and traffic movement was also suspended in the town. The clashes spread to the Batpora and Arampora areas of the town, where scores of youth appeared on roads and started protesting against the action of government forces.

Earlier Joint leadership of Hurriyat Confrence has asked the people to observe the shutdown after Friday prayers and to take out protest marches from the local mosques.
