Srinagar: Situated in the interiors of Rainawari in old city Srinagar, this school has no features of being called a school.
Situated at a distance of not more than one kilometer from the main highway the Government Girls Middle School (GGMS) Jogi Lankar in Rainawari symbolizes the failed education system in the state.
The school is functioning from shabby two rooms and a dilapidated hall at the second floor of the building.
In all the rooms of this “school” one fails to judge what makes it to be called as an educational institution. In one room one finds utensils which are meant for serving Mid-Day Meals to the students, however, the school lacks the water facilities, posing a question on the level of hygiene that is maintained while cooking the food or cleaning these utensils.
This is not the only school in the city however, there are other hundreds of such schools in which are operating from shabby rooms where all the students are chocked to take classes by the concerned teachers.
The school is without drinking water, toilet and electricity facilities besides the classrooms of this “educational institution” has no benches for the students who are assembled in different groups in one room to take the classes.
In these circumstance one can gauge about increasing the reading and writing abilities among the students. Moreover, the school lacks the ground facilities for students which otherwise is a necessary measure for the school to hone skills of students in extracurricular activities.
“We have no water here, no toilet facilities and no play ground. This school lacks all the facilities,” says a 6th class student of this school.
The windows and glasses of the “classrooms” rooms are broken while the roof top is partly shattered and walls worn out.
In this building the government has accommodated three schools, Government Middle School (GMS) Jogi Lankar, GMS Kralyari and Government primary school Ghatt Jogi Lankar. The total number of the students here is around 40 while as the department has posted eight teachers for them.
While the ground floor is occupied by a Kiryana store, on the first floor the two rooms house the staff room, office room and classroom for the students.
“On the second floor the school authorities have dumped the whole infrastructure including black boards, benches and desks as the rooms down are not so spacious to accommodate this seating arrangement,” said an official.
The pathetic condition of this school can be attributed to the government’s inability to improve the educational standards in schools.
The reason behind the shabby conditions of this school is that the school is actually housed in a rented structure and that the institution doesn’t have its own building.
The shabby conditions of this school contradict the tall claims of the school education department of bringing reforms in education sector, said Naseer Ahmad, a resident of the area.
“What sort of reform do you see here? We are chocked here and can’t set up proper seating arrangements for these students,” said a female teacher wishing not to be named.
Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK) G N Itoo said the government can’t invest money on rented schools to install facilities which are lacking in these institutions.
“On the other hand we don’t have availability of land where the department can construct a new school building,” he said, adding that the issue is under the consideration of the government.
