Amid gunshots, cordon launched in Handwara village

Srinagar: Government forces on Thursday launched a cordon-and-search operation at Shatgund, Qalamabad in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Reports said that the a joint team of army and SOG cordoned off Shatgund Balla area at around 2:30 am.

The Joint team later at around 3:00 am fired some warning shots towards the suspected spot, however there was no response so far from the other side, they said.

SP Handwara Ashish Mishra said the operation was launched following inputs about the presence of some militants in the area.

He said that the operation is under way.

Meanwhile, in wake of the cordon and possibility of an encounter at Shatgund, the authorities closed all the educational institutions in the frontier district and snapped internet services in parts of Handwara and Kupwara.

An official of the district administration said that the all schools and colleges across Kupwara district shall remain closed for today except in Machil, Tanghdar and Keran areas.

The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to avoid law and order situation, he said.

In north Kashmir’s Bandipora also authorities have decided to close down all educational institutions.

As per the instructions from Chief Education Officer Bandipora, all the educational institutions (Govt./Private) of Zone Quilmuqam shall remain closed on 11 October 2018, an official said. (with GNS inputs)
