Srinagar: Five local militants were killed in a gunbattle with government forces after they were zeroed in during cordon and search operation in Chogam area of Qazigund on Saturday morning.

The killed have been identified:

(1) Gulzar Ahmad Padder resident of Pombai , Kulgam (HM )

(2) Faizal Rather resident of Yamrach Kulgam.

(3) Zahid Ahmad Mir resident of Okay Kulgam.

(4) Masroor Bhat resident of Fatehpura, Anantnag

(5) Zahoor s/o Abdul Rahman resident of DH Pora , Noorabad , Kulgam.

The gunfight broke out between Government forces and militants at Chowgam area of Qazigund in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district late Friday night.

Official sources said that a joint team of army and SOG launched a cordon-and-search operation at Chowgam village following specific inputs about the presence of some militants.

As such the joint team of forces intensified the searches and fired some warning shots towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants opened fire triggering off an gunfight.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended the Banihal-Baramulla train service for the day.
