Srinagar: At a time when the school education department is making tall claims of reviving abandoned school buildings hundreds of functional school buildings which are in shabby conditions  have remained out of the sight of the department.

The scruffy condition of a school building, Government Primary School Narikhara is a case in place. The school is located in zone Kunzer area of Baramulla district and its buildings have developed severe cracks leaving the students at a risk.

The school has been left unattended by the zonal as well district authorities of the school education department and the students are forced to take their classes in open.

“The building has developed cracks since long but the authorities have forgotten to repair it and provide proper classroom facilities to students,” said a teacher, wishing not to be named.

He said the department has put the lives of the students at risk as there are apprehensions that the structure may cave in anytime and may result in any untoward incident.

“We approached the authorities several times with the plea to repair the building but they are giving deaf ears to it. It seems the officials are least bothered about the safety of students,” he said.

The teachers also complained that the land of the school is encroached by the locals but no action has been initiated by the department to retrieve the department’s land.

“After the building got damaged we shifted the students to adjacent Middle school Reram leaving the building of Narikhara school dysfunctional. The authorities are yet to repair it,” the teacher said.

As the building has been left unattended, the newly constructed toilet and washroom under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are also abandoned.

“Recently, a new school building was constructed for the school but it was not handed over to the school. The school building has no owner,” he said.

Director School Education Kashmir, G N Itoo when contacted said he will take up the matter with the Chief Education Officer (CEO) Baramulla.

“I was not aware of the issue but will talk to CEO about it and necessary action will follow,” he said.
