Protesting teachers stage demos across Kashmir

Srinagar: Massive protests were organised on Wednesday by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers who were demanding implementation of 7th pay commission and de-linking of their salary from MHRD.

The teachers in huge gathering assembled at district head quarters and staged demonstrations amid anti government slogans. The SSA teachers questioned the government for denying benefits of 7th pay commission to SSA teachers and head teachers posted in Upper Primary Schools (UPS).

The teachers staged massive demonstrations in front of respective Chief Education Offices (CEO’s) and later marched towards the office of concerned deputy commissioners and submitted their memorandum to district authorities.

In Bandipora, the teachers under the banner of J&K ReT Teachers Forum assembled near Gulshan chowk Bandipora and raised slogans against the government.

Shouting slogans in support of their demands, they appealed the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to personally intervene into the matter and issue necessary order for granting benefits of 7th pay commission to the SSA teaching community.

“We also appeal the government for delinking of SSA teachers’ salary from MHRD and the salary should be released from state budget,” the SSA teachers said.

The protesting teachers urged the government to release their salary as per 7th pay commission recommendations.

“Our salaries are released in parts. We don’t want to come on the streets but the government has left us with no other option. We are being humiliated by the government. If our problems are not solved, we will launch a state-wide agitation after Eid,” the protesting SSA teachers said.

Pertinently, the SSA teachers and the state government are at loggerheads over the government’s denial to grant the benefits of 7th pay commission to them.

In Baramulla the teachers also stated massive demonstration and questioned the government for its denial of 7th pay commission benefits to SSA teachers.

“We were recruited under SSA scheme but the government implemented the scheme on the analogy of state ReT scheme and regularized all SSA teachers as general line teachers after completion of five year service,” the teachers said. Meanwhile, a teacher from Sopore fell unconscious while participating in protest in Baramulla.

Meanwhile, a sit-in of teachers’ joint action committee was foiled in Srinagar outside civil secretariat by J&K police. The sit-in was organized by amalgam of various associations of teachers to press for the pending demands of SSA teachers.

As the teachers assembled outside secretariat, police swung into action and bundled around 60 union leaders and detained them in Shaheed Gunj Police station. The sit-in was led by president JK teachers’ forum Abdul Qayoom Wani.

“We are giving five days ultimatum to government to fulfill the demands of SSA teachers otherwise we will hold sit-in protest in Sher-e-Kashmir Park on Tuesday (June 19) for 24 hours,” Qayoom Wani said.

Wani said SSA teachers were getting all benefits like other state employees since their recruitment in the department.

“It is unfortunate that after 16 years of their service in department they are denied 7th pay commission benefits and are now treated as contractual employees,” he said.
