Another Shopian youth joins militancy

Shopian: Picture of a gun wielding Shopian youth who has been identified as Tariq Ali Sheikh, resident of Mool Chitragam area in Shopian area of South Kashmir has gone viral on the social media suggesting that the youth has joined militant ranks.
Tariq Ali is 23 years old and is a son to Mohammed Shameem Sheikh, a known Commander of Hizb from Mool Chitragam Area.
Mohammed Shameem was killed in an encounter with government forces along with four associates on 14 January 1994, a family member of Tariq said.
Tariq was not born the day when his father died. He was still in his mother’s womb when his father was killed but he since his childhood was inclined to Islamic preaching’s, said a relative.
He pursued Islamic Education from a seminaries in North and Central Kashmir and also pursued Hifz, Molvi and Aalim degrees and was currently pursuing mufti course, said his brother Arman Ahmed.
“He was picked up by forces in 2016 uprising and detained for nearly four months in many police stations of South Kashmir,” he said.
“After he started working as an Imam in a Mosque in Tangmarg area in last Ramadan, he was again picked up by the Army and tortured in custody, the family member said.
“On 30th March he was in the seminary(Darul-u-loom Raheemiya) where he spent most of his life since he was a child. “We called him up and asked him to accompany his step father to the hospital as he was unwell,” said the family member.
Tariq told us that he would come to the hospital, but after that we were unable to establish any contact with him, his family member further added.
Armaan added that we got shocked today in the morning after his photograph carrying an assult rifle went viral on social media.
“We have filed a missing report in Police station Zainapora few days earlier after we failed to trace him,” added Arman.
Meanwhile, a Police official posted in Zainapora Shopian confirmed the missing report and said that police is investigating the matter.
Tariq is survived by his mother, a brother, step father, two step sisters and one step brother.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Shopian Shri Ram Amberkar Dinkar said police is investigating the case.
