Pulwama: The seasonal labourers from the mechanical irrigation division Anantnag staged a protest in Awantipora against the department for withholding their wages for several years now.

Scores of seasonal labourers said that they are working for five months in a year only on a meager amount and that too that isn’t being released on time.

They said that those who were engaged years after them have been converted to daily wagers and they are getting wages of a full year.

They further said that despite working 24×7 for five to six months every year, their salaries are being withheld due to unknown reasons.

Bilal Dar, representing these labourers said that whenever funds reach this division they are being diverted for other works while no attention is being given towards poor labourers.

He said that it is difficult for these labourers to manage family affairs as they often get their meager wages after years.

Other labourers while criticizing the department for its unjust treatment of seasonal labourers and their families said that these wages constitute the primary source of income for these families and urged the authorities to address the issue promptly.

They said that they have brought the issues into the notice of concerned authorities several times but to no avail.

The labourers have now sought attention of LG Manoj Sinha and other authorities to intervene and release their wages before Eid.
