Awantipora: The Public Health Engineering (PHE) department is supplying contaminated water in Reshipora Ullar area of Awantipora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district,  the locals alleged on Monday.

The residents of the area said that they were first getting water from Renzipora Water Supply Scheme and later from Dogripora Water Scheme and the quality of water was good though the flow of the water was always a concern.

They said that after repeated requests to the government a water supply scheme was constructed in the area and it was started last month only but the water supplied is highly contaminated.

Mohammad Shafi, a local resident said that the water supplied to the locals is very impure and not good for consumption.

He said that after checking it in the laboratory, the iron level in the water was observed to be very high.

By using this water, many people in the area have fallen ill as water is highly contaminated, he said.

Shakeel Banoo, a local woman said that they were getting good quality of water from other schemes but the water being provided from the local scheme isn’t good for consumption.

She said that the government must either provide them potable water from two previous schemes or change the source of the new scheme.

The locals said that they have brought this issue into the notice of concerned authorities several times but nothing is being dine in this regrad.

They requested higher ups to look into the matter at an earliest so that locals won’t suffer any more.
