Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Carbon bomb is an oil or gas project that will result in at least billion tonnes of CO2 emissions over its lifetime. In total about 200 such projects have been identified world over, which mainly includes projects in US, Russia, China, Australia and India. Carbon Bomb projects in India include mainly the Carmichael Coal Project, Gevra Coal Mines in Chhattisgarh, and Rajmahal Coal Mines in eastern Jharkhand.

Whenever coal, oil, or gas is extracted, it leads to pollution and environmental degradation. In addition, fuel combustion produces particularly high carbon emissions. Studies show that over 80% of these carbon bomb projects are reluctant to reduce emissions which is matter of high concern.

Addition to coal, oil and gas operations, methane is also a powerful greenhouse gas that is routinely emitted from gas operations, traps 90 times more heat than Carbon dioxide. Methane is also a big threat to environment.

International Energy Agency (IEA) an esteemed organization that has developed a roadmap to bring the world as close to zero carbon emissions as possible by 2050.Therefore our country has to play it’s part to defuse Carbon bomb by following the road map of IEA which mainly include reducing high quantity of carbon emissions to the atmosphere through afforestation and also by reducing anthropogenic emissions.
