ANANTNAG: The Municipal Council of Anantnag on Saturday conducted an inspection of all government and private hospitals and laboratory clinics within its jurisdiction.

The inspection was held after the MC took a Suo Moto cognizance of the allegations that some private hospitals and clinics were blatantly flouting hazardous biomedical waste disposal norms.

During the inspection, the team found disposal of medical waste in municipal trash bins, while at others, dustbins with proper colour code were found missing.

At some places, the health institutions were not following the bio-medical waste disposal rules thus putting the lives of people and patients at risk.

Most of these hospitals had an agreement with a private waste disposal company.

Some of the hazardous bio waste like syringes, surgery gloves and bottles were also finding their way to local trash collectors.

Meanwhile, all the erring hospitals were fined more than Rs 30000 and were directed to improve their mechanism immediately.

President Municipal Council Anantnag Er. Hilal Ahmad Shah said that many hospitals and clinics were ignorant about the rules and regulations regarding the biomedical waste disposal.

He said there was a need to conduct awareness drives for Clinics and hospitals in this regard and that MC Anantnag will soon conduct a workshop in this regard as well.
