Students of GMS Onagam interact with SKUAST-K faculty

Srinagar: Faculty of Forestry, Benhama-Watlar, SKUAST-K organised a Day long awareness Program on “Importance of forests in our life”. The Programme was organized by Division of Social and Basic Sciences FOF, Benehama in collaboration with Government Girls school, Onagam Bandipora. 61 students and 10 teachers of the school visited Benehama campus of SKUAST-K to take part in the event.
Dr Syed Naseem Geelani, Associate Professor and Head Division of Social and Basic Sciences who is also Students Welfare Officer presented welcome address. He briefly highlighted the importance of Forests and needed to conserve them.
Prof. S.A Gangoo, Dean Faculty of Forestry highlighted the importance of forests and their role in mitigation of climate change. He explained the role of forests to sustain the human and animal life on this planet in a lucid manner.He posed many questions to students who came up with right answers.Prof Gangoo appreciated the students for their enthusiasm.
Earlier, Dr. Syed Naseem Geelani led the students of GMS Onagam to Experimental Nursery of FOF .He was accompanied by Prof. G.M Bhat, Dr. Showkat Ahmad, teachers of Government Girls school, Onagam and Jauhar Rafeeq, President students Council FOF. Prof. G.M Bhat explained in detail the types of trees found in in our forests.He gave a detailed account of the medicinal plants found in our forest and their utility.
Prof Bhat narrated different practices for production of Quality planting material (QPM) of different conifers, Deciduous plants and cultivation of various medicinal plants which are used in the treatment of different diseases. In the field, students were shown different plants including, Cedrus deodara, Cupressus torulosa, Cryptomeria japonica, Pinus walliachiana, Ulmus vilosa and other important plants.
Students also visited Apiary unit of FOF Benehama, Dr. Showkat Ahmad, Assistant Professor Entomology, Faculty of Forestry shared valuable information with students on importance of honey bees. “Bees are important part of biodiversity on which we all depend for our survival”, said Dr. Showkat in his address.
Javaid Jawad, Head Master GMS Onagam Bandipora in his address said that awareness programs on role of Forests should be conducted in future also. He proposed that SKUAST _K should invite students of Government run schools for such informative interactive sessions. He thanked Faculty of Forestry for inviting them to Benehama campus and providing a chance to the underprivileged students to interact with their faculty members.
Prof. G.M Bhat, Head Division of Silviculture and Agroforestry presented the vote of thanks. He thanked the students, teachers and Scientists of FOF for spending their time in the Programme.
The program was anchored by Jauhar Rafeeq, President Student Council of the Faculty.
