GDC Awantipora holds seminar on Drug Abuse

Pulwama: The Government Degree College Awantipora in collaboration with Syed Mantaqi Memorial College of Nursing and Medical Technology on Thursday organized an awareness programme on ‘Drug Abuse’.
The event was held under the aegis of ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’.
Dean Outreach Prof. Lily Want, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) was the chief guest at the occasion.
Principal GDC Awantipora, Prof. Zahida Naseem delivered her r welcome address at the occasion.
In her address, Prof. Lily Want highlighted the broader contours of drug addiction among youth and underscored the need for sustained and collaborative efforts by various stakeholders to save the young generation from the scourge of this menace.
She underlined the need to reach out to those who have fallen prey to this menace and rehabilitation of them to live a dignified life.
“Lack of awareness among youth is the biggest hurdle in curbing this menace. As teachers and parents, it is our moral obligation to raise awareness about drug abuse,” she said, adding that the rehabilitation programmes should reach every nook and cranny of the valley to stem this rot.
“Drug de-addiction among the vulnerable sections of society needs consistent, sustained and collaborative efforts to curb this menace from spreading its tentacles,”
Principal SMMCN &MT Asmat Parveen spoke about the causes of drug abuse and measures to prevent it.
She talked at length about the biological, social and economic causes of drug abuse and delineated various measures to be adopted at individual and collective level to keep the youth away from this menace.
Faculty at SMMCN &MT- IUST Andleeb Yousuf deliberated on the ‘Economic and Socio-economic Consequences of Drug Abuse’.
“Drug abuse not only destroys our health but also poisons our social relations besides draining us economically,” she said.

Another faculty member, Ulfat Amin in her address talked about the role of family in rehabilitating the drug addicts.
