Officials carry out awareness drive regarding illicit cultivation of bhang, poppy

ANANTNAG: The Excise Range South Kashmir Tuesday organized an awareness camp in collaboration with NYK Anantnag regarding illicit cultivation of poppy/ bhang.
The awareness was carried out by ETO South, Sameer Ahmad Dar. Deputy Director, NYK Khalil Ahmad Mir was also present on the occasion.
The officers shared their thoughts with young volunteers and explained the perils of drug abuse. They laid emphasis on the effects drug abuse has on society.
Terming it a menace, the ETO said that every effort must be made to save an individual from falling into this trap and termed it the collective responsibility of the society.
He appealed to the volunteers to spread the message among their peers and do their bit and rid society of this menace. He also briefed the attendees on the stringent provisions of NDPS act and the punishments attracted by illicit cultivators. He appealed to people to report any such cultivation so that action can be taken against the culprits.
The Deputy Director, NYK said that there are many productive pursuits that the young generation can involve themselves in and shed light on various self-employment opportunities being provided by the Govt. He said that family members must come forward and seek help from authorities if their child has fallen into this and called on the society to be supportive of the rehabilitation process.
It is in place to mention that Excise Range South has been actively pursuing destruction of illicit cultivation of poppy/ bhang in the district.
In this context, illicit cultivation on more than 200 kanals of land has been destroyed by joint teams of Excise, Revenue and Police.
