Srinagar: Women academicians are getting lead roles in the University of Kashmir (KU) after the newly appointed Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Nilofer Khan took over the charges of the post.
The new VC seems to be particular about women empowerment and participation of girl students in various activities, which she revealed in many of her interviews in Media and during her interaction with the girl students of the University.
In the last few days, the varsity administration assigned charges of some crucial posts to the women academicians, for which the orders were approved by the newly appointed female VC of the University.
Recently, Dr Aneesa Shafi, Professor and Head, Department of Sociology was appointed as new Dean of Students Welfare of the University of Kashmir.
A noted academician, Prof Shafi previously served the University in various capacities including Provost Girls Hostels and Director Centre for University Society Interface.
Also, Prof Zahida Jabeen was appointed as Provost Girls hostels of the University as well, officials said.
Prof Tabasum Firdous was appointed as first woman Director of the Centre of Central Asian Studies (CCAS), of the Varsity while Dr Shazia was appointed as Coordinator of the varsity’s Centre for Women’s Studies and Research (CWSR)
Before becoming Director CCAS, Prof Tabasum held the charge of Director CWSR. She has earlier served as Proctor from 2008-2015 and also as Deputy Director UGC-HRDC KU from 2014-2016, the officials added.
Prof Tabasum holds an MA and PhD in Political Science and International Relations, respectively, from the University of Kashmir and her specialization areas are Central Asia, Afghanistan, and Iran.
Dr Shazia, Assistant Professor CWSR holds M.A. in Sociology and a PhD in Women’s Studies from Advanced Centre for Women’s Studies, Aligarh Muslim University. She has worked as Research Officer at State Resource Centre for Women.
Notably, the incumbent VC of the University has herself held various positions in the University before attaining superannuation from her services.
Prof. Nilofer Khan has worked towards women empowerment in the Varsity and was instrumental in the Gender Sensitisation Committee and Internal Compliance Committee of the varsity as well.
She was dealing with the problems and the issues with the women folk in the KU.
After her appointment as new VC for KU, she said her focus will be to implement all the scholarship schemes for the female students that are notified by the government.
Prof. Nilofer Khan believes that empowering women was not snatching the rights of male folks but it is to create an environment in a family, institution or a society where females can be given rights in decision making.
Soon after holding charges of VC KU, Prof Nilofer Khan shared that in the past women were given roles in catering or to play their part at the reception. “But the time has changed now. These days women are given charges of finance, they are taking responsibility for IT because they have evolved and progressed over the years. They have got the skills and they can do any job,” she said.
Prof. Khan believes that the role of women in society has changed with the changing times. In the past, women were deprived of the rights to utilise their hard earned salary on themselves. “But now women are given different roles at different levels,” Prof. Nilofer Khan told media persons soon after assuming charges of the VC KU.
