Pulwama: The residents of Banpora Rakh village in Litter Tehsil of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district Monday staged a protest against the Jal Shakti Department for failing to provide potable water to the residents.
The residents assembled on Sangam-Pulwama road, raised slogans against the authorities and staged a sit-in, blocking the vital road for over an hour.
The protestors said that they were facing acute water scarcity for the past several months but authorities have failed to take any step in this regard.
“We are facing shortage of water since last several months but authorities are acting as mere spectators,” they said, adding that they will continue their protests if authorities failed in providing drinking water to the area.
“Few years back we were connected with one water supply scheme but being at the tail-end we were not receiving adequate drinking water,” they said.
“Later we were connected with Zahid Bagh water supply scheme last year and it worked well for some time but after sometime condition worsened and we are without water since last several months,” they added.
The filtration plant of the scheme is defunct since last one decade due to which whenever we receive water it is highly contaminated and is supplied directly from a local stream, the locals alleged.
“We met all the concerned officers and highlighted our issues several times but nothing was done,” the protestors said.
They requested higher ups to look into the matter and take immediate steps in this regard so that the area will get potable water.
Meanwhile, the closing of vital road lead to heavy traffic mess after which team of officials along with police visited the spot who later pacified the protestors and assured them that their issues will be solved soon.
