Militancy down, not over in JK: DGP
Jammu: Stating that the improvement in the overall security situation in J&K was a welcome step but nevertheless militancy was still a challenge as it was not over even though it has come down significantly, Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh said Thursday.
Talking to media men on the sidelines of a sports event in Jammu, the DGP said that situation has indeed improved in J&K but militancy was still a challenge as it wasn’t over yet.
“After a long time and after hectic efforts, such a peaceful situation is being seen in Jammu and Kashmir. But militancy was still a challenge as it was down but not over,” the DGP said.
“We are acting against people who are running machinery of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir and such people have been dealt with to a larger extent and efforts will continue further to corner them,” he added.
Replying to a query about revamping of Village Defence Committees in Jammu and Kashmir as Village Defence Groups, DGP Singh said that talks of strengthening and revamping VDCs are going on since long and matter is before the Home Ministry.
“Agencies from Pakistan are trying to spread militancy in regions having peaceful situation. Police and security forces are foiling such designs and the efforts to foil such designs from across border will remain continue,” he said, adding that “the decision on VDCs is part of efforts under which we are trying to make best use of our resources on ground and to keep them well motivated so that nefarious designs are foiled.”
He, however, said that any decision by Home Ministry will be for strengthening VDCs and for betterment of its members.
Singh said that that the recently recovered semi-solid material recovered on February 24 was seemingly meant for carrying out the big strike in Jammu.
He, quickly added that it wasn’t clear whether the material was a chemical weapon as the reports of samples sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) are still awaited.
As per officials, on February 24, a drone movement was reported on International Border in Jammu after which Special Operation Group of Jammu and Kashmir police launched an operation in area near International Border and seized consignment believed to have been dropped there by the drone.
Officials said that the material recovered from this consignment included three detonators, three remote controlled improvised explosive devices, one bundle of cordtex wire, two timer improvised explosive devices, one pistol, two magazines, six grenades and seventy rounds.
“The consignment also had three bottles filled with some semi-solid like material which on primary investigation is suspected to be some explosive and possibly of a new variant,” they said.
DGP Singh while replying to a query about the new recovery, said that are some serious security concerns on which forces are keeping a close vigil and all surveillance measures are kept on alert.
“We recently recovered some material that included some readymade IEDs and other material including some chemical which has been sent to FSL for examination and details of nature of this chemical will be shared once we get reports,” he said. (KNO)
