Srinagar: One local militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in the Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Monday, police said.
The encounter broke out between militants and security forces at Nambal in the Awantipora area of the district this evening, a police spokesperson said.
He said that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering a gunfight.
“In the ensuing gunfight, one militant was killed,” the official said, adding that the slain has been identified as Irfan Ahmed Sheikh son of Abdur Rashid Sheikh, a resident of Karimabad, Pulwama. “He has been missing since January 17, 2022,” the official said.
Notably, 23 militants have been killed in 14 encounters in Kashmir valley this year so far.
Meanwhile, militants hurled a grenade at SSB post in Chapper-gund, Ganderbal on Monday evening during Naka checking by police. However, no damage was reported in the incident.
Official sources said that militants lobbed a grenade on an SSB post at Chappar-gund area of Ganderbal this evening when police had laid a naka on the basis of inputs about militant movement in the area.
“No damage was reported in the incident. We had set up a Naka in the area after receiving inputs about militant movement. The suspected militant tossed a grenade that exploded on the road side,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ganderbal Nikhil Bokar said, adding that a search has been launched to nab the attackers.
