South Kashmir encounters: Militant killed, two soldiers and cop injured

Srinagar: One militant has been killed in an ongoing encounter at Mirhama area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday. Meanwhile, two soldiers and a policeman were injured in another encounter that is raging in Verinag area of Anantnag district, police said.
Officials said that one militant has been killed in an ongoing encounter at Mirhama in Kulgam, however the identity of the slain militant is yet to be ascertained.
Earlier reports said that a joint team of Police and army launched a cordon and search operation in Mirhama.
As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off an gunfight.
Meanwhile, two soldiers and a policemen were injured in the initial exchange of firing during an encounter at Nowgam village of Verinag area in south Kashmir’s Anantnag, officials said.
An official said that during initial exchange of fire a cop and two soldiers of 19 RR have received injuries who were shifted to nearby hospital for treatment.
He identified the injured as Rohit Yadav and Ishant of 19 RR and policemen Depak Kumar.
The official said that a joint of team of police, Army and CRPF after receiving information about the presence of militants launched a search operation in the area.
“As the joint team of forces intensified searches towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the party, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter,” they said.
The exchange of fire is going on in the area and two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area, the officials added.
Meanwhile, a tweet by police said that one police personnel suffered injuries during the initial firing.
“The injured cop has been shifted to a hospital,” the official added.
