196 cases under POCSO registered between 2015-19 in JK: MHA

Srinagar: The Government of India Tuesday said that a total of 196 cases have been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act During 2015-2019 in Jammu and Kashmir.
The government provided the replying to a question about the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) across the country including the figures and measures taken.
Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs, GK Reddy said in the reply that a total of 196 cases have been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act During 2015-2019.
The graph maintained by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) reveals that between 2015 to 2019 highest number of 109 cases were registered in 2019 while no case was registered in 2017 throughout the year.
It said that 30 cases were registered in 2015, 25 in 2016, and 32 cases in 2018 taking the total cases registered to 196.
The MHA informed that the State Governments are competent to deal with such offences under the extant provisions of laws.
“National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) compiles and publishes statistical data on crimes in its publication “Crime in India”. Published reports are available till the year 2019. Analysis of this data for cases registered under various crime heads on crimes against children does not show any uniform trend”, the MHA said.
It said that the Government has approved setting up of 1023 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) including 389 exclusive POCSO Courts for expeditious trial and disposal of cases related to rape and to POCSO Act.
“As per published information the Conviction Rate for POCSO cases in 2019 was 34.9”, the MHA reply said. (KNO)
