Gun fight rages in Pulwama, protests erupt

Pulwama: A gunfight is going on between holed up militants and government forces in Ratnipora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.   

Reports said that a joint team of army’s 50RR, 183/182 BN of CRPF and SOG Pulwama launched a cordon and search operation in Ratnipora after receiving inputs about the presence of some militants in the area.

As the joint team of forces closed in towards the suspected spot the hiding militants fired on the government forces triggering an encounter.

However, the fire fight was stopped due to darkness as the troops continued with the cordon of the entire area.

Reports said that after a brief lull from both sides, contact has been established again and heavy firing amid massive clashes is going on in the area.

A police official said that area was cordoned off at around 3 am and there was brief exchange of fire however, now again  contact has been established and heavy firing from both sides is going on.

Two to three militants are believed to be trapped in two houses, the official said.

As per local sources, as the news of encounter spread in the area, youth from different areas of Pulwama district assembled and started pelting stones on government forces which is being retaliated by tear smoke and sound shells.

A local source said that clashes are going on near the encounter site.
