Scarcity of drinking water triggers protest in Sopore village

Sopore: Scores of residents of SaidporaSopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday took to the streets to protest against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department for failing to provide adequate drinking water in their area since last many years.
SaidporaZaingeer village barely 03 kms away from main town Sopore according to residents are being forced to drink contaminated water from streams and ponds, saying that PHE department has failed to provide proper water supply in their area.
“Our children and elderly suffer the most due to diseases that are caused by taking contaminated water,” Manzoor Ahmad Dar, a local resident.
“We are now fed up as there is no water. We approached the authorities many times but to no avail. We are being forced to hit the streets to protest. We appeal Governor and concerned authorities to look into matter and provide proper water supply to our area otherwise we will stage massive protests,” he said.
AEE, PHE Sopore said that, “no doubt the area has been witnessing shortage of drinking water. We have taken up work to provide drinking water to the area soon.”
“As of now, we will supply them clean drinking water through tankers,” he said.
