Pesky power cuts irk Kokernag residents
Anantnag: The residents of Kokernag and its adjacent areas in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district here have expressed resentment against Power Development Department (PDD) for failing to provide adequate power supply in their areas.
Locals from Kokernag, Vailoo, Wangam, Nagam, Hangalgund and its adjacent areas alleged that the unscheduled power cuts have made the life of residents uncomfortable.
“PDD is giving priority to urban areas and are ignoring rural areas,” they rued, adding that “we are receiving hardly three to four hour power supply in 24 hours due to which locals especially students are suffering.”
Bisma Bashir, a social activist said that the department needs to do something about unscheduled power cuts as it is badly affecting the locals here.
She appealed to the district administration to intervene in this regard and redress the grievances of common people.
“The government and concerned agencies should expedite the process of installation of power meters in Kokernag and its adjacent areas so that power theft is prevented and brought to an end,” she said, adding that “we pay our bills on time, but we are forced to suffer due to unscheduled power cuts.”
Locals urged authorities to take cognizance of the issue at an earliest so that they could heave a sigh of relief.
Superintending Engineer (PDD), Anantnag and Kulgam district, GhulamRasoolKhanday said that the locals are demanding more power than is actually supplied to them. He appealed to the general public to use electricity judiciously and not waste it.
