Sopore shuts on 26th anniversary of 1993 massacre

Sopore: A complete shutdown was on Sunday observed in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district to mark the 26th anniversary of Sopore massacre.
Pertinently, on this day in 1993, at least 57 people were shot dead by BSF troops from 94 battalion after the massacre, troopers indulged in arson and set ablaze 400 shops and 75 residential houses from main Chowk to Tehsil office Sopore.
The call for the shutdown was given by the Joint resistance leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.
All the shops and business establishments remained closed while the traffic was also thin in the town.
Eyewitnesses said that hundreds of residents offered congregational Fateha in Masjids.
Also, Civil Society and Trade members of Sopore gathered at Martyrs graveyard here to offer special prayers to the slain.
Meanwhile, Civil Society held a protest rally from Iqbal market to main Chowk Sopore.
