Sopore observe shutdown, remembers 1993 massacre victims

Sopore: Sopore town observed a complete shutdown on Sunday to mark the 26th anniversary of Sopore massacre.

Pertinently, on this day in 1993, at least 57 people were shot dead by BSF troops from 94 battalion. After the massacre, troopers indulged in arson and set ablaze 400 shops and 75 residential houses from Main Chowk to Tehsil office Sopore.

The call for the shutdown was given by the Joint resistance leadership (JRL).

All shops and business establishments remained closed while traffic ply very thin on  roads in the town.

Eyewitnesses said that hundreds of residents offered congregational Fateha in Masjids. Also civil society and trade members of Sopore gathered at martyrs grave yard here to offer special prayers to the departed souls.

Meanwhile, civil society held a peaceful protest really from Iqbal market to Main Chowk Sopore.
