Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and President Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti on Monday lashed out at the BJP led central government for passing the Triple Talaq bill in the LokSabha.
“The bill is an assault on family structure and would lead to economic disturbance for men and women,” she said while addressing reporters at her Srinagar residence.
“BJP has entered into our houses through Triple Talaq bill. Marriage is a contract and everybody has a right to decided it by its own way,” she said.
She added that it’s Gandhi’s India and turning it into Zia-ul-Haq’s Pakistan is unacceptable.
“Muslims across India and Jammu and Kashmir will stay with Gandhis’ secular and democratic India,” Mehbooba said.
“By brining this triple Talaq bill, the BJP will enter into our homes and it will disturb the men and women of Muslim community economically,” she said.
“Democracy is not run through brute majority but consensus. Muslims accept the decisions of Supreme Court on invalidation of Triple Talaq unlike the Sabari mala verdict. Best is to empower Muslim women to be able to face the world independently in case of a breakup,” she said.
“I have gone through a broke marriage and I feel that woman face biggest challenge economically after her marriage is broken,” she added.
Stating that the bill was passed despite there being no support from Muslim Members of the parliament, Mehbooba said, “After creating divisions on religious and sectarian lines, BJP is now resorting to divide Muslim families through Triple Talaq bill.”
