Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on Thursday expressed shock and disdain over the proposed government move of shifting the Jawahar institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports from Pahalgam.
Former MLA Pahalgam and District president AnantnagAltafKaloo censured the governor administration over the imprudent step of moving the reputed institution of JIM&WS from Pahalgam asserting that the move will snatch the livelihood of many locals.
“It is a blinkered move and will have serious repercussions on the livelihood of locals. How sordid it is that instead of promoting Pahalgam as a primary tourist destination, the government is mulling to destroy it. I vehemently condemn the thought which is behind this move,” he said.
Altaf said that Pahalgam is already on the tourist map of India and that the area possesses ample opportunities for the further diversification of tourist related activities. “Pahalgam abounds in many Sufi shrines like Ashmuqam, Gofbal and Sarbal which could have been packaged as a tourist circuit,” he said.
District president asserted that the people of pahalgam have always held aloof the torch of amity particularly during the annual Amaranth yatra by ensuring the visiting yatris all facilities and other services.
“The government is however abusing the spirit of the people of pahalgam by this ill-conceived step of shifting JIM&WS from here,” he said.
Altaf said the reputed institute was established in 1983 and has a history. “Shifting of such institutions should not be carried out whimsically. I urge the governor administration to withdraw the order as soon as possible, for such an imprudent step by governor administration could push people to hit the streets,” he said.
