Hospital panel says no to Manjot’s offer to donate kidney

Srinagar: While the Sikh girl’s father had already expressed his reservations regarding the decision of his daughter Manjot to donate a kidney to her friend, the Authorization Committee for organ transplants in Kashmir has Tuesday rejected the case of the girl offering to donate her kidney to her terminally ill Muslim friend.
Director, Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Prof Omar Javed Shah, who is also chairperson of the committee, said there were “serious legal issues” in the case.
He said after examining the entire case in-depth the panel “unanimously decided not to authorize the donation”.
The committee has rejected the case on the basis of ‘complaint or doubt,’ while quoting authorisation rules, the chairman said, the seven-member committee constituted under J&K Transplantation of Human Organ Rules was empowered to reject a case on basis of a “complaint or doubt”.
Notably, a Sikh girl, Manjot Singh Kohli hailing from Udhumpur district had offered to donate her kidney to save the life of her friend Samreen Akhtar who is suffering from kidney failure.
The decision, while it was appreciated widely, was opposed by the girl’s father, who had said that he would oppose the decision ‘tooth and nail.’
Manjot’s father claims that he is paralyzed due to a fatal accident and now the family cannot afford to have two bed ridden people at home.
Gurdeep Singh, Manjot’s father had also leveled allegations against her daughter that she wants to become a celebrity over night and that was the reason that she is willing to donate her kidney.
