Kashmir shuts against ‘killing spree’
Srinagar: Following the call given by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), a complete shutdown was observed Monday across the Valley to protest against the 17 killings in Southern districts in last three days.
JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had called for a shutdown against the recent militant and civilian killings in South Kashmir.
On JRL’s call, all the shops, business establishments, petrol pumps, schools and colleges remained closed while as public transport remained off the roads.
However, the private vehicles were seen plying normally on the roads in most of the areas of Srinagar. Similar reports were also received from other districts also.
Notably, the authorities unlike during earlier shutdown calls had not imposed restrictions in Srinagar’s Old City areas but had deployed police and paramilitary troopers in strength in these areas to ensure protest free day.
Officials said that barring some minor stone pelting incidents, the situation throughout the day remained peaceful and under control.
Meanwhile, the authorities had also suspended the trains services from Baramulla to Banihal today.
Officials said that the services were suspended today for ‘security reason’, saying that the services would likely be restored on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the internet services were suspended in Anantnag district following the killing of six militants and a civilian during an encounter and subsequent clashes on Sunday.
The locals from the district said that the mobile internet services continued to remain suspended for the second consecutive day here.
