Srinagar: Three Jaish-e-Muhammad militants were Tuesday killed in an encounter that raged between forces and militants in Chankitar village of Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Police said that on credible inputs about the presence of militants in the area, a cordon and search operation was launched by forces in Tral.
During the search operation, the hiding militants fired upon the search party, which was retaliated, resulting in an encounter.
Reports said that three JeM militants were killed in the gunfight while as police claimed only two bodies have been recovered from the gunfight site.
Reports also said that M4 Carbine snipper rifle was also recovered from the gunfight site, which was possibly used for the recent sniper attacks on government forces..
Police however said that the slain militants killed in Tral have not been identified so far, saying that they are from JeM but their identities are being ascertained. Search was going on when the report was last filed.
Meanwhile, police urged locals not to venture near the gunfight site, saying citizens are requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials.
“People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosives materials if any,” police said.
