Update: 2 militants, civilian and a cop killed in Fatehkadal encounter
Srinagar: A civilian and two militants were killed in an encounter in old city area of Fatehkadal while as paramilitary CRPF trooper was injured in the incident, police sources said.
Earlier, a senior police official had claimed that three militants have been killed during the firefight.
An official said that the gunfight broke out early morning after forces cordoned off the Fateh Kadal area of the city following specific inputs about the presence of militants in a house.
He said the militants opened fire on the forces as they approached the suspected house. “The forces retaliated, triggering a gunfight,” he said, adding that a policeman, identified as Kamal from Reasi died in the initial shootout.
He said two militants and the son of the house owner were killed in the gunfight. “The exchange of fire has stopped but searches are underway,” said the official.
Reports say that top Lashkar commander Mehraj Bangroo is believed to be among the slain militant while as the other slain militant is believed to Faid Mushtaq Waza from Khanyar area.
Meanwhile, clashes have started in Khanyar and Fatehkadal area where the encounter took place. Reports suggest that the third dead body is that of a civilian who is the house owners son where the encounter took place.
