Kashmiris want to get out of political uncertainty

Srinagar: Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) on Saturday termed the elections as a ‘futile exercise’, saying that people rejected it yet again as there was a near total boycott of it.
JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik in a statement issued here said that “people see this delusive cosmetic attempt as another assault on them and hence are resisting it tooth and nail.”
“It’s time authorities pay heed to the clear message emanating from the rejection of these elections by the people of Kashmir. People of Kashmir have no faith in them. They see this process as a deception played upon them by successive governments in India to hoodwink Indians for electoral gains and to mislead the international community by selling them as people’s verdict in India’s favour,” JRL said.
JRL said that people of Kashmir want to get out of the political uncertainty surrounding them for the past 71 years and the resultant distress.
“The killings and repression, the everyday pain of shouldering the coffins of our educated and budding youth is hurting us badly,” JRL said, adding that “they want the resolution of the Kashmir dispute once for all and peace for them and people of South Asia.
“The resolution of the dispute as per internationally accepted norms of conflict resolution which is through right to self determination as was promised to the people, or through negotiated settlement among the stakeholders through dialogue and deliberations is the only way out,” JRL added.
The leadership said that people of Kashmir ask India to show ethics and humanity and resolve the issue.
JRL said that the policy of military repression has not succeeded either in the resolution of the dispute or in dissuading people of Kashmir from pursuing it.
“So reason and humanity demands that instead of going for cosmetic and iron handed measures to continue the status quo they should pay heed to the message from the people and resolve the dispute,” JRL said.
