8 BJP candidates win unopposed, no election held in Sopore

Sopore: At least eight candidates contesting on Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ticket in the ongoing Urban Local Bodies (ULB) polls have won the elections unopposed in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
This was for the first time that election didn’t take place in Sopore as all the eight candidates from BJP have won the elections unopposed. In absence of opposition, BJP won all eight seats.
The regional parties including National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic party (PDP) stayed away from ULB and Panchayat polls here, citing the situation in Kashmir and centre’s noncommittal attitude on Article 35A.
However, Congress party could not find any candidate to file nomination in ULB election in north Kashmir’s Sopore.
In Sopore Municipal Council, out of total 21 wards only eight candidates including a migrant Pandit had filed their nomination papers on BJP ticket who emerged as winner unopposed in eight wards under numbers 01,02,03,04,05,08,17 and 21, officials said.
Besides in 13 wards no candidate even bothered to file a nomination.
Notably, BJP party has also fielded two women candidates from two wards of Sopore.
Meanwhile, Sopore town today observed a complete shutdown on the call given by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL).
All the shops, business establishments remained shut in Sopore while as traffic was off the roads throughout the day.
However, authorities had already ordered closure of all educational institutions across Sopore town as ‘precautionary measures’.
