MeT predicts rains for today, says weather to turn sunny
Srinagar: Barring light rainfall on Thursday, the weather in the Valley would remain mostly dry, weatherman said on Wednesday.
Director Meteorological (MeT) department, Sonum Lotus informed ‘Kashmir Vision’ that the Valley including the plains as well as the higher reaches would experience light rainfall from Thursday morning.
He said that there is no forecast of heavy rain or snowfall in the upcoming days.
“We are predicting dry spell in the Valley for the next upcoming days in the Valley,” he said, adding that day temperature would slightly go up while the night temperature would continue to remain the same as it was during the previous nights.
Lotus informed that as per the prediction, the weather on Thursday would remain mostly cloudy but after that it would turn sunny.
Meanwhile, Kargil in the Ladakh region continued to be the coldest place in the state at around minus 14 degrees Celsius, while nearby Leh town stayed also at freezing point, officials said.
Srinagar recorded a minimum of zero degrees Celsius, an official of the MeT Office here said.
He said Qazigund town in south Kashmir recorded a low of -3.6 degrees Celsius, while the nearby Kokernag town registered a low of -3.9 degrees Celsius.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir had a low of 0.2 degree Celsius, he said.
Pahalgam, the south Kashmir resort which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, registered a minimum of -8.2 degrees Celsius, the official said.
He said Gulmarg the famous ski-resort in north Kashmir recorded a low of -9.4 degrees Celsius.
Leh town in the Ladakh region quivered at -10.8 degrees Celsius, while the nearby Kargil town braved cold at -10 degrees Celsius.
Leh was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir, the official said.
Pertinently, light snowfall in the Valley including the plains brought a sigh of relief to the people from the prolonged dry spell.
The snowfall started at 5 a.m on Monday and continued through the day intermittently.
The authorities had also issued avalanche warning at several places, asking people to not venture out in avalanche prone areas.
Meanwhile, the snowfall had also resulted in the closure of 300 km long Srinagar-Jammu highway.
The highway according to the officials continued to remain closed for the third consecutive day following the slippery conditions of road triggered due to snowfall.
