Hurriyat leaders not detained, but arrested: Hurriyat (G)

Hurriyat Conference (G), on Thursday, clarified that Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leaders, including its secretary public relations Altaf Ahmed Shah, Srinagar district president, Raja Meraj-u-din and Hurriyat (G) spokesperson, Ayaz Akbar, have been taken under preventive custody under Sections 107 and 151. They were handed over to police after a proper remand was obtained from the magistrate.

One of the Hurriyat spokesman said that in the first week of June, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) raided residences of Altaf Ahmad Shah, Raja Meraj u Din. After day long searches, nothing objectionable or any amount was recovered from them.

Hurriyat (G) said that despite nothing objectionable was found, Altaf Ahmad Shah was again summoned on June 9. He was cross-examined till June 23 by NIA and during this period, the investigative agency did not find any evidence or any trace about their alleged involvement.

The spokesman said that NIA on June 28 again summoned Altaf Ahmad Shah to Delhi and Raja Meraj u Din was also served with a notice.

In response to summons issued by NIA, both leaders had to leave for Delhi on Wednesday morning, but on June 27 (Monday), the state police arrested them and took them in preventive custody. The police then produced them before a magistrate and obtained a proper remand.

Hurriyat (G) said that they are in police custody and have been kept at an unknown destination.
