Police cracked the whip over the alleged dereliction of duty that lead to the killing of Deputy Superintedent of Police (DSP), Mohamad Ayub Pandith, Thursday night.

Viewing the killing and the delayed reaction by the police officials to the attack on Pandith seriously, Director General of Police (DGP), S P Vaid, has attached the Superintedent of Police (SP), North, with the police headquatre.  Police ordered that  SP North, Sajad Khalid Bhat, would report at the police headquarter till further orders and placed Additional SP Traffic Srinagar, Sajad Shah in his place.

Police also formed a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to probe the  incident even as three more persons were arrested.  The Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Central Kashmir, will constitute a  SIT which will probe and “nab all the culprits who are involved in the gruesome lynching of the police officer.’’  According to police officials the SIT will be headed by SP North Sajad Shah.

DSP, Muhammad Ayoub Pandit of Nowpora, Khanyar, in Srinagar was lynched to death by a furious mob in Old city’s Jamia Masjid area in Nowhatta on Thursday while he was on duty.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Muneer Khan said that SIT, headed by DIG Bhat will thoroughly and on fast track investigate the barbaric lynching of the police officer.

“Three more persons have been arrested taking the number to five. More arrests are possible,” Khan said, adding tghat the “ culprits will be brought to justice.’’

The lynching of the DSP has drawn outrage in the valley, with people terming the incident “barbaric and anti-humanity.’’

The incident seems to have happened for the first time in the Kashmir valley. Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has called the lynching to death of the cop as unIslamic and outside the parameters of our values and religion.  Director General of Police, S P Vaid, said, “ We have identified 12 persons in connection with the case and five of them have been arrested.”  On Friday DGP had said two persons were arrested, while another one was identified. He said the police have resolved not to spare the people behind the act.

“It is the resolve of Jammu and Kashmir Police that we are not going to spare these rascals,” he said.

The DGP said the investigation in the case is on and everything would be clear once the report comes. “Let the investigation complete, then only we can say what has happened,” he said.

The total number of people arrested in the case has reached five.

The police had said the mob attacked the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Security) after spotting him “behaving suspiciously outside Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta locality during congregational prayers at the mosque.’’

“People should understand the difference between good and bad,” Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police SP Vaid had said. “They killed someone who was on duty to protect them.”  Witnesses said that three people were injured after Pandith allegedly began to shoot at them with his pistol as the mob tried to catch him. They are believed to have stripped him naked before beating him to death.
