Restrictions, curbs put in place to halt JRL’s public rally
Srinagar: Authorities imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar as well as Anantnag town to foil a proposed march by separatists to the south Kashmir district on Friday.
A police official said restrictions have been imposed in seven police station areas of Srinagar and Anantnag town as a precautionary measure.
While restrictions under Section 144 CrPc have been imposed in Safakadal, Nowhatta, Rainawari, Khanyar and M R Gunj police station areas of the city, partial curbs were in force in Kralkhud and Maisuma areas, the official said.
He said curbs on the movement of people have also been imposed in Anantnag town.
Manning the deserted roads, the police personnel as well the paramilitary troopers were found vigilant in every nook and corner of the two districts including Srinagar and Anantnag to foil the proposed public rally.
The Police and paramilitary troopers were seen manning the roads since the wee hours of Friday morning at various Srinagar and Anantnag to thwart any possible protests.
The lanes as well as the main roads in Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of six police stations including Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khanyar, MR Gunj, Safakadal, Maisuma and Kralkhud remained under restrictions while a few places among them were under partial restrictions as the traffic was seen plying on the roads while the shops also remained open.
Similar situation was witnessed in Anantnag district where several places especially the Lal Chowk were sealed by the authorities by erecting concertina wires on the roads.
The temporary barricades as per the local sources had affected the pedestrian as well as the vehicular movement in the area.
During the day, the various pro-freedom leaders including Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and senior pro-freedom leader Hilal Ahmad War tried to defy the restrictions to march towards Anantnag, the venue of public rally.
Notably, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani continued to remain under house detention while the JKLF chief, Muhammad Yasin Malik continued to remain under detention at Srinagar’s central jail.
Mirwaiz as per his twitter post was scheduled to leave for Anantnag at 12:30.
Defying the restrictions, Mirwaiz while coming out from his Nigeen residence was disallowed to march towards Anantnag and was detained out of his house and was lodged at SP’s office at Hazratbal.
Meanwhile, the authorities for the second consecutive week today barred people to offer the mandatory Friday prayers at the historic jamia Masjid.
Earlier on previous Friday, Hurriyat (M) had said that the Jamia was closed for the prayers 15th time this year.
Now with today’s ban, the closure of the Jamia Masjid mounts to 16th time this year, it said.
“Amid tight security, all the four gates of the Jamia Masjid remained closed throughout the day,” the local sources informed Kashmir Vision.
Meanwhile, reports said that the minor clashes erupted in Anantnag after the mandatory congregational prayers ended in the local masjid’s there.
The youth were dispersed by firing a few tear gas canisters, reports added.
A local news gathering agency (KNS) quoted the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Range, Munir Ahmad Khan as saying that the situation across the Valley remained peaceful and under control.
However, the train services was suspended for “security reasons” in Kashmir valley today.
“We have suspended all train runs in the Kashmir valley for security reasons following advisory from the police,” reports quoting the railway official said.
The authorities had also suspended the internet services in Pulwama and Anantnag.
According to the KV correspondent from Anantnag, internet services in Pulwama and Anantnag remained suspended throughout the day in view of the JRL’s call.
The Board of School Education (BOSE) had also postponed the examinations scheduled for today.
